Classic Bristol Channel Cutter by Lyle Hess

Pateke was handcrafted in Tangiteroria, Northland, NZ over a 10 year period 1989 to 1999 by Mr Fenton Hamlin, an experienced yachtsman, boat builder and farmer. Fenton built yachts of all sizes including racing dinghies, trailer yachts and finally Pateke to cruise international waters. She was built without limitations to be a home away from the farm. The technical details are outlined in appendix.

Felling of the tree

The Kahikitea was the tallest straightest tree on the farm. It was felled and taken to a mill where is prepared and treated prior to being returned to the woolshed on the farm

Initial stages building

Building Pateke started in 1992 and finished in 1999. Progress was steady and advice was on hand from the Pardey's and Eric Thiesen

Finishing touchs

The final stages of building her also involved a move to the Bay of Islands and construction of a new boat building shed.

Building and history


Built by the current only owner and launched in 1999 according to Lyle Hess' design.

This is a 30 foot boat designed by Lyle Hess based on the traditional Bristol cutters.


The owners left New Zealand in January 2005, and traveled via Tasmania, Fremantle, Cocos Keeling, Mauritius and Rodrigues to Knysna, South Africa, where they arrived in December 2005.

Then in 2006, the yacht traveled along the coasts of Mozambique, Madagascar, Mayotte, Zanzibar, Tanzania and Kenya.

She arrived in Polynesia in April 2022. Between June 2022 and June 2023, numerous works were carried out: deck renovation, careening, hull painting, overhauled engine, varnishing, and many more.
